this is the long and arduous process of my zebra painting

originally this canvas was used for a calendar submission

the theme for the calendar was the 2012 lunar new year: year of the dragon

photoshopping what direction i want to gravitate towards

this is what i submitted to the client, called “welcome the new year” (acrylic and photoshop)

the client said that the image was too scary, so i tried to soften/alter the dragon

this submission got rejected, and i didn’t like the image large scale, so i broke down the form

i used this painting for a live body paint show at exchange la in downtown los angeles

i was actually really happy with this image, but it didn’t have a meaning… so i kept trucking on

i wanted to paint an idea of greed, and i was using the zebras as a metaphor

perhaps multiple zebras to tell the story? maybe

maybe not

maybe yes

the final image…finally. i was going to shoot myself.

horray for pillows!

but we are jumping the gun here, let’s throw it back…

i spent all this time creating the unicorn, lady rainicorn, and then i photoshopped what i initially wanted

the goal was to create a tribute to adventure time because i love that show. i wanted to make something epic.

i’m pretty happy with it, even though its a very mature image of something so delightfully jovial and psychotic

then i went online and had the painting printed on fabric

excitement all folded up

the pillows I’ve made so far

i made another painting for adventure time – this piece is dedicated to an episode called beautopia

this is not one of the better episodes of adventure time, but it was the first I’ve ever seen and it totally blew my mind. below is a photoshopped version of what i initially wanted

.

the scale didn’t work in my piece – this is what i finalized

pretty pleased with this one as well

I’ve been working on a commission where the client wanted me to paint on their helmet

these are a few of my sketches

first step, mapping out my composition with auto tape.

i actually forgot the type on the bottom, so i had to move the entire composition 1/2inch up!

building up form

honing in on detail

the night before, i was stressed over the smoke. i didn’t sleep all night, and about 6am, it still wasn’t right. i had a hysterical breakdown and fell asleep for an hour. then i painted until 230pm.

trying to fix the type – looked better on the computer

the front – the smoke was suppose to wrap around the helmet but i couldn’t get the texture right

my boyfriend, jason, has been my fresh pair of eyes in this whole process. he suggested the ‘eve’ on the front.

i just saw the girl with ‘the dragon tattoo’ and i wish i was as cool as lizabeth slander.

i am not computer savvy, I’m not nearly as witty, i can’t drive a motorcycle, and i don’t have piercings or tattoos.

all i can do is pretend that i am an antisocial genius and play tracks from the movie (hello “immigrant song” by trent reznor)

until i can take down swedish bank accounts and find women killers

this will have to do

every year i try to make presents for people

these are stuffies. I’m working on my sewing skrillz.

they say hello.

i made this for my grandmother.

sushi paintings for my sister.

my parent’s xmas gift was a painting of them

then i took a photo of that painting and had it printed on a mug.

i also painted a family portrait for my boyfriend’s family.

then i took a photo of the painting and had it printed on a mug.

as for the boyfriend, i painted his steering wheel.

preparation – the grocery store newsprint ads actually look pretty cool

process

right before i added a clear coat/sealant.

i returned to the bay area (my hometown) and went grocery shopping with my parents

one of the reasons why i love the bay area

my mom decorated the house with cabbages. love it.

my sister’s gift to me – a box that said i.o.u.

i drew doodles of my parents on white boards, and then made magnet accessories.

teddy bear plush buddy for cousins, christine and beau.

heart bum.

little piggy mustache muchacho plush buddy with for my grandfather

as for the lunch, pan roasted classy bitch veggies and potatoes

classy bitch seasoned rice to go with our prime rib.

my cousins playing with iphotobooth next to their uncle who had a migraine

our dinner, honey baked ham

bacon brussle sprouts

candied yams

desserts

when i flew back, i made my own cookies.

it was an awesome holiday.
